UKR V IRL ( Pool A ) Electric Ireland Olympic Qualifier Dublin 2012
Match Review UKR - IRL 0-12
Ireland 12, Ukraine 0
Host Ireland showed it is a contender for the berth to the London Games after manhandling Ukraine in a 12-0 decision today in Dublin.
Timothy Cochrain netted a hat trick and Eugene Magee, Michael Watt and Michael Darling each struck twice in the decisive victory. It took nearly 15 minutes for Ireland to get on the board, but after Cochrain put in the first goal, it opened the flood gates.
The Irish held a humble, if not solid 5-0 lead at the half, but erupted in the second half with another seven markers. The Irish didn’t let up as the minutes ticked by and Ukraine was simply out-worked and worn down in the last 20 minutes.
It was Ireland’s second biggest win in the history of its men’s national team – the largest win came in a 13-0 affair against Malta in 2002.
The Ukraine is still winless and has ceded 20 goals in two games. They have tomorrow off to regroup before taking on Malaysia on Tuesday. Ireland has a key game after the rest day against Korea on Tuesday.
