Match Review KAZ - BRU 8-0

Report from Singapore Hockey Federation

Kazakhstan put eight past Brunei in one-sided affair

Kazakhstan were able to brush aside a poor Brunei side on Monday evening (11 April) to continue their charge towards the next round of the Women's Hockey World League.

It was the Kazakhs who started out strongly as they relentlessly pressed Brunei within their own half, although the Bruneians put in their best effort to hit their opponents on the counter.

Kazakhstan finally made the breakthrough on the 10th minute mark with good play by forward Olga Khonina to intercept a pass in the D and fire past the otherwise reliable Haji Fatimah.

Kazakhstan extended their lead in the 24th minute through Domashevna, and added another after Natalya Sazontova was able to pick up a cross from the right in the 31st minute to fire past an unguarded goal.

Irina Dobriolgo added another for the Kazakhs on the stroke of half time, with a beautiful swerving shot into top corner of the net after a cleared penalty corner to take the score to 4-0.

Brunei showed rare glimpses of attacking flair in the first half, especially with a 9th minute free kick in the Kazakh half that was easily cleared by the defensive wall.

Custodian Fatimah continued to pull off two excellent saves in the 19th minute from a succession of Kazakh penalty corners. A defensive mistake by Haji Baizura allowed Viktoriya Shaimardanova to shoot straight at goal, but the Brunei custodian was at hand to claw the shot away.

The Kazakhs wasted no time in attacking Brunei from the restart, earning a stroke in the 37th minute of the game. However, Domashneva's shot was well saved by Haji Fatimah.

The Kazakhs could have another to the scoresheet on the 43rd minute but for Haji Fatimah's quick reflexes.

Like in the previous two games, Brunei fell back in their own half in the last 35 minutes and hardly registered an attempt to go forward. When they did, however, they were unlucky not to score such as in the 64th minute when their attempt went just wide of the post.

Brunei’s failure to get the ball past their opponents allowed the Central Asians to find space to score three more goals from field play, including a clever assist by Olga Khonina that allowed supersub Gulim Idirissova to poke past Haji Fatimah at the near post in the 42nd minute.

Kazakhstan then sealed their win after a mazy run by the hardworking Khonina into the D, before the ball was passed to Iridissova to fire home in the 55th minute.

Brunei are still seeking their first win of the tournament, but the scoreline could have been far worse for them had it not been for the efforts of their custodian.

Kazakhstan increased their goal difference to 22 and will hope to extend their goalscoring run against Sri Lanka on Wednesday (12 April).
