Quarter-finals are confirmed at ERGO Hockey Junior World Cup

Day 3 at the Women's ERGO Hockey Junior World Cup in Mönchengladbach was full of surprises as South Africa, India, England, Spain and USA accompany top seeds The Netherlands, Argentina and Australia into the quarter-finals. Host nation Germany, two time junior world champions Korea and New Zealand miss out and head into the 9-16 playoffs where they are joined by China, Belgium, Canada, Ghana and Russia.  

Pool A at the Women's ERGO Hockey Junior World Cup today saw the USA defeat Ghana 6-0 to advance to the quarter-finals after Korea suffered a 0-2 defeat from the current champions Netherlands. In Pool B, South Africa struggled slightly against a gritty Canadian team in the first half but pulled away after the break to accompany the dominant Argentinean squad into the quarter-finals.

Australia sealed the top spot in Pool C with a 3-3 draw against their Oceania rivals New Zealand and India finished second to also qualify for Thursday’s quarter-finals with a 10-1 win over Russia. Pool D wrapped up the last day of pool play in Mönchengladbach with Spain producing a shutout against Belgium to secure their ticket into the quarter-finals, while England wrestled down host nation Germany 2-1 to join them in the top half of the draw.

Thursday’s quarter-finals will see Spain facing India with Argentina taking on their Pan American rivals USA. Australia will play England with reigning world champions the Netherlands taking on South Africa. All quarter-final matches will be played in the main stadium.

Pitch 2 will cover the 9-16 placement round which will be opened by the encounter between Korea and Canada. This will be followed by China playing Ghana and host nation Germany taking on Russia. The last match will see New Zealand facing Belgium. The winners of these matches will proceed to the 9-12 placement matches.
