Coach Education Pathway

The Coaching Education Pathway is divided into 4 levels: Level 1, Level 2, Level 3 and High Performance. To move through the pathway you must successfully complete the face-to-face and online courses at each level.

All levels, apart from High Performance, focus on the following areas:

  1. Role of the Coach: roles, qualities, and characteristics of a FIH Hockey Academy Coach
  2. Preparing to Coach: preparing the environment, facilities, equipment, safety and emergency procedures
  3. Coaching Theory: relevant coaching knowledge theory
  4. The Athlete: athlete development stages
  5. The Game: rules and values of hockey and technical skills
  6. Plan, Do, Review: planning, goal setting, delivery strategies and evaluation method

Level 1 Coach

To access this course you need to be over 16 years of age and have completed the online Start Coaching course.

Level 2 Coach

To access this course you need to be over 18 years of age, actively coaching a hockey team and hold a FIH Hockey Academy Level 1 Coach Certificate.

Level 3 Coach

To access this course you need to be the Head Coach or Programme Director of a hockey team, have a minimum of three (3) years qualified coaching experience and hold a FIH Hockey Academy Level 2 Coach Certificate.

High Performance Coach

The High Performance Coach Level is divided in two courses: the International Coaching and the International Final Coaching courses. Candidates are identified by Continental Federations and the FIH High Performance and Coaching Panel and then invited to attend the course by the FIH.
