LAUSANNE – Following the completion of the five Continental Championships, the FIH today announced the updated World Ranking for both men and women.

Current Men's World Ranking
Current Women's World Ranking

The biggest surprise in the ranking is the fall of Argentina from the women’s #1 position to the second spot. Las Leonas slid to second after losing in the Pan American Games final against the United States. Replacing Argentina in the #1 position is the Netherlands, which won the European Championship and also topped Argentina in the final of Rabo FIH Champions Trophy in July.

Germany, England and China round out the women’s top five positions, while the Americans’ Pan American title edged them into the Top 10.

On the men’s side, there was no change at the top of the World Ranking as Australia maintained its top billing thanks to winning the Oceania Cup. Coming in at second is European Champion Germany. The rest of the top five are all European teams with the Netherlands, Spain and England.

The latest FIH World Ranking is key update as the current placements will determine the seeding for the upcoming Olympic Qualification Tournaments. Nine men’s teams and nine women’s teams have been automatically qualified for the London 2012 Games, while 18 additional men’s and women’s squads will receive invitations to take part in six different Olympic Qualification Tournaments.

The winners from each of the three Qualification Tournaments (three men, three women) will join the other teams at the London 2012 Games. The teams that will take part in the qualifiers, along with the host and dates of the events will be announced at a later date following the upcoming meeting of the FIH Executive Board next On November 11-12.
