12 London 2012 Olympians gain selection for Quilmes event

Argentina coach Franco Nicola has confirmed his 18 member squad that will compete on home soil in the Champions Challenge I later this month.  The tournament takes place from 24th November until 2nd December in Quilmes, a city located 17 kilometres south of Argentina’s capital city Buenos Aires.

The group contains no fewer than 12 members of the Argentina team that claimed a tenth place finish at the London 2012 Olympic Games, including defender Pedro Ibarra, midfield star Lucas Rossi and goalkeeper Juan Manuel Vivaldi, as well as attacking siblings Matias, Rodrigo and Lucas Vila.

However, four players from the Summer Olympics have not been selected, with Lucas Cammareri, Ignacio Bergner, Matias Paredes and Santiago Montelli being overlooked in favour of other players. In their places come Juan Espinosa, Matías González, Nahuel Salis, Ignacio Ortiz, Juan Cruz Aguleiro and Guillermo Schickendantz, a player who earned a reputation as a feared goal-scorer in the Euro Hockey League with Spanish clubs Club de Campo (Madrid) and Club Egara (Terrassa). It is worth mentioning that both Matías González and Juan Espinosa travelled to the London 2012 Games as reserves. The full Argentina squad for the Champions Challenge I can be found below.

The host team have set themselves the target of winning the competition and earning a place at the Hockey Champions Trophy in 2014, although they are certain to face strong opposition from Challenge rivals Korea, Canada, Malaysia, Poland, South Africa, Japan and Ireland.
