Michael Behrmann announces team for London

With 45 days to go until the start of the Olympic hockey tournament, the German women's head coach Michi Behrmann today announced the his squad for London.

The last team activities before the final cut, the Investec London Cup last week, in which the team finished third behind the Netherlands and Australia, and two test matches against Australia on Tuesday and Wednesday, which Germany won 2-1 and 3-1, gave Behrmann the certainty needed for finalizing his selection.

The German women are possible medal contenders, but face the daunting task of breaking a fourth place curse that has befallen them recently, as the team finished in the invidious just-missed-out-on-the-podium rank in the last Olympic tournament in Beijing 4 years ago, in the last edition of the World Cup ind 2010, and in the latest installment of the Champions Trophy earlier this year.

One of the first to push for the elusive medal will be legendary striker Natascha Keller. The 35-year-old is likely to be disputing her last Olympic Games and will be wanting to end her Olympic career on a high. In any case, the record international, currently on 410 caps which is more than any other German hockey player, male or female, in the history of the sport, will claim another historic achievement in London in competing in her fifth Olympic Games.

Joining Keller in the campaign for the Olympic podium is team captain Fanny Rinne who will be disputing her fourth Olympic Games, and is one of only three players still on the team for London who won gold in Athens, the other two being Natascha Keller and Mandy Haase.

Olympic Squad Germany Women:

Yvonne Frank (GK), Anke Brockmann, Lisa Hahn, Kristina Hillmann, Mandy Haase, Nina Hasselmann, Natascha Keller, Marie Mävers, Julia Müller, Janne Müller-Wieland, Katharina Otte, Jennifer Plass, Fanny Rinne, Christina Schütze, Maike Stöckel and Celine Wilde.

The two P-accredited athletes will be Kristina Reynolds (GK) and Jana Teschke.
