“Ump Cam” to be trialled in Johor

July 4, 2013
New technology embraced as Hockey’s trailblazing reputation continues

The broadcast coverage of international hockey events will take a bold stride forward today when the “Ump Cam” is trialled in the Quarter Final phase of the Hockey World League Semi Final competition in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

This exciting new technology is designed to add another dimension to the visual imagery of this fast moving sport, and is expected to generate fascinating on pitch footage from the unique perspective of the match officials.

The FIH took a decision to explore the possibilities surrounding this head-mounted technology as part of its drive to get the fans closer to the sport, and is yet another example of hockey’s on-going desire to push the game forwards on all levels.

The first match official to wear the “Ump Cam” will be England’s Hamish Jamson, who is taking charge of the third Quarter Final game between Pakistan and Korea, which is scheduled to take place at 7.15pm local time (UTC / GMT +8). The technology will also be used in the Germany v Malaysia match, with Ayden Shrives of South Africa donning the headpiece, a match which begins at 9.30pm.

Make sure you tune into the FIH Live Stream to see the trial in action on
