New Zealand sealed a first place finish in Pool B courtesy of a 2-0 win over Belgium’s Red Panthers on a sun-drenched day at the FINTRO Hockey World League Semi-Finals in Belgium.

Anita Punt and Gemma Flynn scored the goals for a Black Sticks team that finished the pool phase with a 100 per cent win record and a defence that has yet to concede a goal here in Antwerp.

As the winners of Pool B, New Zealand will face the fourth placed team from Pool A in the cross-over quarter-final, with Japan being their opponent on 30th June. Belgium were third in Pool B at the time of writing, and appear to be on track for a quarter-final showdown with Korea, who finished second in Pool A.

“Full credit to Belgium, they came out firing so it was nice to get the second goal”, said Black Sticks striker Gemma Flynn, who has now scored seven times in four matches at the HWL Semi-Finals. “We had a few chances but it was pretty even throughout the game. We pride ourselves on our defence so it is really good to walk away from these pool games having kept a clean sheet.”

Looking ahead to the Black Sticks’ quarter-final match-up with Japan, Flynn said: “It will be a good challenge, so now our focus switches to preparing for that game.”

Belgium goalkeeper Aisling D’Hooghe, who reached a century of senior international appearances for the Red Panthers, said: “I am very happy to reach 100 caps but a victory would have been better. Today was a good opportunity to have a good game before the quarter-finals, and we wanted to make it as hard as possible for New Zealand.”
