BEL v AUS Goal 2 for AUSPosted June 24, 2015

Australia women defeated hosts Belgium 2-0 on Wednesday evening in pool B at the FINTRO Hockey World League Semi-Finals to pick up their second win of the competition.

Both teams started well in front of a packed venue at KHC Dragons home in Antwerp, Belgium. However, the Hockeyroos silenced the home crowd quickly as Jodie Kenny hit the top right hand corner of the net with their first penalty corner after only nine minutes.

In the second quarter Australia had a goal from a penalty corner disallowed by the video umpire before Belgium went close with a penalty corner of their own, with captain Anouk Raes’ shot inches wide of the right hand post.

Towards the end of the third quarter, Australia were awarded a penalty stroke, which Karri McMahon converted to put Australia 2-0 ahead.

Belgium tried to get back into the game but Australia held on to win and draw level on points with New Zealand who they face in their next game.

This game saw Australia captain Madonna Blyth equal Nikki Hudson’s cap record for Australia as she represented her country at senior level for the 303rd time.

Looking ahead to breaking that record against Trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand, Blyth said: “The next game will give me the chance to reflect on my career and all the opportunities I’ve been lucky enough to have. First and foremost it will be a really tough match for us and we will definitely want to improve on today – we’re going to have to be better against in-form New Zealand.”

Following their loss, Belgium captain Anouk Raes said: “It was a really difficult game, against the second best team in the world rankings. We were really aggressive in the second half of the game, but Australia got their second goal and made it really difficult for us. We are happy and confident for the rest of the tournament.”

Speaking of the impact that the crowd has had on her team she added: “It’s a pleasure playing here. I know it’s during the week so it’s not easy for everyone to come but there was a lot of people here tonight – they are the 12th man for us, so keep coming out to support us!”
