Match Review KOR - ITA 1-1

A last gasp equaliser from Giuliana Ruggieri gave Italy a deserved point against higher ranked Korea as the two Pool A opponents started their competition with a 1-1 draw.

Italy - 16th in the FIH World Rankings and winners of the Hockey World League Round 2 event in Montevideo - gave an excellent account of themselves against the world number 9, protecting their goal with excellent defending whilst also causing their higher ranked opponents a number of problems with their quick counter-attacking style.

Korea opened the scoring in the 11th minute when ace goal-scorer Park Mihyun tapped home an inch perfect pass from team captain Kim Jongeun, but the lively Korean attack was largely kept quite for much of the game.

Park Seunga’s went agonisingly close to doubling the Korean advantage when she hit the side-netting in the final quarter of the match before the Italians netted a brilliant equaliser following a string of penalty corners.

Ruggieri was the scorer, getting a touch on a penalty corner strike to guide the ball into the Korean goal and sparking wild celebrations among the Italian players and coaching staff.
