Azerbaijan in top form at WL Round 1

Perfect record keeps Azerbaijan ahead of the field

After three days of action at the World League Round 1 tournament in Doha, Qatar, Azerbaijan is in pole position with six points in its first two games. Host Qatar has also earned six points, but has played one more game than the Azerbaijanis.

Ultimately, the tournament could be decided based on the first-day result between the two current leaders, which Azerbaijan won 5-4 against Qatar. A dark horse in the standings is Sri Lanka, which has a split 1-1 record in its first two outings, with its one loss coming in a slim 3-4 loss against Oman.

The next two days are sure to be thrillers as the five-team field battles for the one qualification spot that is up for grabs to go to World League Round 2. Both Qatar and Sri Lanka are in a must-win situation when they meet on Saturday. Meanwhile Azerbaijan could solidify its position with a win against Oman, but Oman is a tough opponent, holding a split 1-1 record in its first two games.

The tournament concludes on Sunday when Oman takes on Turkey and Sri Lanka and Azerbaijan meet.
