Ireland, Austria and Egypt men and Ghana women into second round
Four teams moved onto the second round of the Hockey World League after three separate tournaments this weekend. On the men’s side, Ireland and Austria punched their tickets to the second round after finishing in the top two at the World League Round One tournament held in Cardiff Wales. The Egyptian men also moved onto the second round after winning a three-team event in Accra, Ghana. Rounding out the quartet was the Ghana women, which swept a three-game series against Nigeria to earn its berth in Round Two action.
In Cardiff, the Irish men were clearly the strongest team and flexed their muscles today against Sweden, cruising to an 8-0 win to seal their spot in the second round. Ireland went unbeaten in the event and came out with a +17 goal difference in three games. On the more dramatic side was the Austrians, which will also move onto Round Two after earning a dramatic 4-3 shootout win against host Wales in the final game. The win gave the Austrians five points, while Wales just missed the mark with four points.
In Ghana, the men’s berth to Round Two all came down to today’s Egypt vs. Ghana game, which Egypt came out on top of with a 3-1 victory. The Egyptians held a 1-0 lead at the half and never looked back as they were on a mission to move onto the next round and moved step-by-step to accomplish meet their goal.
On the women’s side, the Ghana women’s berth was known already on Saturday after they earned their second win in two games against Nigeria. With only two games in the event, today’s game was academic, but nevertheless, Nigeria put in its best performance, holding Ghana to a only a 4-2 win. It wasn’t enough to move onto the second round, but it was a moral victory for Nigeria. With three wins as many games, the Ghana women will move onto Round Two.Back
