Australia & England meet in ‘Ashes’ clash; Netherlands & Argentina set for Olympic final rematch

The huge crowds that have flocked in their thousands to watch the first four days of the Argentina Hockey World League Final have been treated to some scintillating matches in San Miguel de Tucuman.  However, as anyone who has looked at the line-up for the tournament semi-finals will tell you, the best is yet come.

The first semi-final is a rematch of the Gold medal game at the Investec Hockey World League Semi-Final in London, with high-flying Australia set to clash with the ever-dangerous England (1830 UTC/GMT -3). England will be looking for revenge against the team that pipped them to the title in London, ensuring that this match has the potential to be a classic. Both sides have incredible fitness levels, solid defences and some truly world class attacking players. England striker Alex Danson has been in sparkling form this tournament, while Hockeyroos youngster Kellie White is also proving herself to be a predatory goal-scorer. With Cricket’s ‘Ashes’ series currently taking place in Australia, this weekend promises to be a big weekend of Aussie-Anglo contests.

The second semi-final is a mammoth meeting between London 2012 Olympic champions the Netherlands and reigning World champions Argentina (2100 UTC / GMT -3). These two teams have dominated the women’s game for years and although the result is difficult to predict, we can certainly guarantee incredible levels of passion, drama and noise as a six thousand Argentinean fans aim to cheer their beloved Leonas to glory. The Dazzling Dutch have produced some outstanding performances so far in this tournament, and in team captain Maartje Paumen they have a player who has the ability to inspire all around her. Lidewij Welten has also performed well here, netting four goals to be the joint tournament top scorer alongside Argentina forward Delfina Merino coming into this game. Merino and team mate Carla Rebecchi have been hugely impressive, while 36-year-old Luciana Aymar continues to perform at an almost superhuman level.

The morning session focusses on the 5-8 classification matches and begins at 0900 local time when New Zealand take on Korea. That match is followed by an 1130 meeting between China and Germany.
