5-8 classification matches

New Zealand overpower Korea

Goals from Kayla Sharland, Petrea Webster and Gemma Flynn gave New Zealand’s Black Sticks a 3-1 win over Korea to reach the 5-6 classification match at the Argentina Hockey World League Final in sunny San Miguel de Tucuman.

New Zealand were impressive starters in the game and deservedly took a 7th minute lead when Black Sticks captain Kayla Sharland clinically dispatched a penalty stroke.

That advantage was doubled ten minutes later thanks to an open play strike from Petrea Webster, with New Zealand taking a 2-0 lead into the half time break.

Gemma Flynn netted New Zealand’s third goal in the 37th minute when she touched home a slick penalty corner routine at the right post, effectively winning the match against the rivals from Asia.

Korea deservedly reduced the deficit in the 59th minute through Han Hye Lyoung, who deflected a penalty corner into the roof of the net.  However, it proved to be little more than a consolation, with New Zealand claiming the win and sealing their place in the 5-6 placement game.

Dominant Germany suffer defeat to China

China have set up a 5-6 classification meeting with New Zealand thanks to a 3-1 victory over Germany. Despite the Germans dominating possession, circle penetrations, shots on goal and winning ten penalty corners, goals from Peng Yang, Huang Ting and Liang Meiyu proved to be enough for a China victory.

Peng opened the scoring with a superb tomahawk effort that flew into the bottom left corner of Barbara Vogel’s goal in the 12th minute before a penalty stroke from Huang Ting doubled China’s advantage six minutes later.

China’s third goal arrived in the 57th minute, with Liang Meiyu crashing home a ferocious strike after a wonderful solo run.

Germany pulled a goal back six minutes from the end, with Eileen Hoffmann forcing home from close range to complete the match scoring.
