NZL V NED ( Pool A ) Hockey World League Final Rosario 2015

Match Review NZL - NED 1-4
The heat played its part in a match that was tough and fast, but far from faultless between New Zealand and the Netherlands. Both teams play innovative and attacking hockey but ultimately, in this match, the Netherlands displayed their ability to create scoring opportunities from quickly turned over possession. The 4-1 scoreline puts the Netherlands at the top of Pool A after two games.
The Netherlands took early control of the match when Caia van Maasakker (3') drilled the ball into the goal from a penalty corner. This followed a sustained opening slavo of pressure from the world number one side, who were determined to set out their stall early.
Petrea Webster (17') equalised for New Zealand when she capitalised on a rare mistake by Netherland's 'keeper Joyce Sombroek. The world's number one 'keeper saved the initial shot, but Webster was on hand to scramble the ball home.
Some fabulous stick skills by Lidewij Welten nearly led to another Dutch goal, but Sally Rutherford proved again just why she is such a respected 'keeper, as she dived high to her right to make the save. As the half pressed on, New Zealand showed why they are the world number four team.
As Webster, Stacey Michelesen and Anita Punt were creating their own havoc among the Netherland's defence, so the Black Sticks defence was working solidly at the other end of the field to contain the Netherland's attack.
This containment fell down with just two minutes left on the clock. Kelly Jonker (29') started and finished the move, weaving her way down the pitch and into the circle before feeding to Margot van Geffen and then receiving the ball back to slot home.
The match was 40 minutes old when Welten linked with Ellen Hoog and the FIH Player of the Year coolly dispatched the ball high into the back of the net. Sophie Cocks nearly reduced the scoreline with a blistering shot but Sombroek was equal to the challenge and her lightning reactions kept the ball out of the net.
Laurien Leurink (41') made it 4-1 after van Geffen had edged her play around the circle before slipping the ball to Leurink, who knocked it past Rutherford's outstretched legs.
The final quarter saw New Zealand throw everything into the attack, but they were met with a steady line of Dutch sticks which held them just outside the Netherland's circle. While the Black Sticks enjoyed possession, coach Mark Hager will be looking to his team to turn such possession into goals in future matches.
