Report from Singapore Hockey Federation

Sri Lanka jinx Cambodia with unlucky 13

Sri Lanka ended their Women's Hockey World League Round 1 tournament with a huge win over a Cambodian side that have not had any luck against their Women's Pool opponents.

Sri Lanka took a bit of time to get off the mark, as three of the first twenty penalty corners in the match were easily saved by Cambodian custodian Keo Sreytouch.

It would not be fourth time lucky for Sreyrouch as Sri Lanka's Chathurika Wijesooriya scored directly from Sri Lanka's fourth penalty corner.

A field goal by Chaturika Panawala in the 11th minute extended their lead to 2-0, before she added another from a penalty corner in the 16th minute to treble Cambodia's deficit.

Harshani Katupulle added a fourth goal for the Sri Lankans with a powerful shot from wide right, before two goals by Wijeysooriya from penalty corners and a field goal by Nayana Battagodage left Cambodia battered.

The second half was more of the same for Sri Lanka as they found an eighth goal for themselves through a lightning surge into the Cambodian D gave Wijesooriya the space to score.

Cambodia tried to keep the scoreline as low as possible with good saves by Keo Sreytouch in the 41st minute of the match to deny Sri Lanka two opportunities from a field goal and a penalty corner.

However, it would all fall apart for them again as Wijeysooriya and teammate Chathuri Konnasingha would score two more field goals in the 39th and 49th minutes to increase the score to 10-0.

Geethani Gangedura would score Sri Lanka's 11th goal after she was the first to react and shoot at goal after Cambodian defence failed to clear Sreytouch's save from a penalty corner.

Cambodia's failure to hold onto the ball in midfield allowed Chathuri Konnasingha to score again in the 57th minute as Sri Lanka surged into the D, before adding another to her tally at a penalty corner in the 60th minute.

Despite the heavy drubbing, Cambodia managed to get a few decent attacking chances. They managed to get their first penalty corner of the match in the 24th minute but failed to make much of the opportunity to score as they only committed four players to take the penalty corner.

They also managed to get a long ball ahead into their Sri Lankan D for Phan Mao to run onto in the first half, but her shot was easily saved by keeper Erandi Keerthirathna.

Cambodian captain Theab Sina was one of their better players on the pitch, working hard to win the ball back at any opportunity, although she did not have the strength to hold off Sri Lanka's defenders as they easily pressed her to regain possession.

Cambodia exit this tournament at the bottom of the group without scoring a single goal, but the experience of playing with higher ranked opponents should help them improve their play in future.

Sri Lanka's women concluded their Round 1 tournament in 5th place and with six points in the Women's Pool.
