Match Review BRU - CAM 0-0
Report from Singapore Hockey Federation
Brunei emerge as victors after shootout against Cambodia
The 2016 Women Hockey League tournament saw its first shootout in Brunei’s match against Cambodia on Wednesday (13 April).
Both teams were equally aggressive at the start of the first half, but it was Brunei who created the first chance at the fifth minute mark.
This chance was turned into a penalty corner for Brunei but the ball narrowly missed the goalpost after the players scuffled to get the ball in.
From then on, the match was pretty much a deadlock, with both teams losing possession of the ball and passes between teammates being mostly sloppy and miscalculated.
Brunei tried long-ranged passes to create faster chances for the team, however, most of their attempts ended up with Cambodia intercepting the ball and them trying to gain possession of the ball again.
The closest opportunity for a point in the scoreboard during the first half came at the 24th minute mark, when Cambodia’s Choem Sreynin received the ball from a teammate but fails to break through the defense set up by Brunei at the corner of the D.
Five minutes before half-time, the scoreboard remained 0-0 and both teams struggled to break through the defence of the other team, with challenges made from both sides.
However, the second half showed us that Brunei came back from the half-time break determined to score and bent on strengthening their defence and offence against Cambodia.
Penalty corner shots were aplenty in the second half, with Brunei having the most chances as compared to Cambodia.
At the 52nd minute mark, Abdul Salim Norassikin from Brunei attempted to convert the penalty corner shot and whirled the ball into goalpost, only for it to hit the side of the posts.
Dead set on winning, Brunei continued to pressure Cambodia throughout the second half with the former deflecting most of Cambodia shots from the goalpost.
Abdul Salim Norassikin was constantly challenged by Aliza Chheoung from team Cambodia as Norassikin hustled to catapult the ball into the goalpost, three minutes away from full time. Aliza Chheoung successfully diverted the ball to her teammates but not before the final whistle had sounded.
The match on a stalemate, officials decided to conduct a shootout to determine the winner of the match, giving additional time.
Three attempts were allowed during the shootout, and Brunei came out victorious with three goals, while Cambodia only managed to score two goals, thus officially crowning Brunei as the winners of this match.
