Merciless Thais Dismantle Sri Lanka
When Sri Lanka took on Thailand in the 2016 Women Hockey World League Round One at Sengkang Hockey stadium it was similar to David taking on Goliath as Thailand crushed Sri Lanka mercilessly with the scoreline of 9-0.
Thailand score within seconds from kickoff as Nakpolkrung Kanyanut smashed home a rebound that fell to her path after a mazy round down the right by Jantapet Kanya.
Captain Sakunpithak Tikhamporn was phenomenal in the first half as she scored three goals to cap off a dominating first half for the Thais.
The Thais ended first half with a 7-0 lead with Samanso Supansa and Boonkrajang Painee piling on Sri Lanka’s misery.
Displaying relentless spirit, the Sri Lankans emerged from the break with a resolute defensive mindset and were bent on stopping the Thais at all cost.
They achieved their aim with certain success as they kept Thailand scoreless for the next 13 minutes. However, a penalty corner shot deflected into the path of Watcharoen Ornpanee and she made no mistake from close range.
Although Sakunpithak went on to score once more, the Sri Lankans displayed great composure and sheer grittiness to limit Thailand to two goals in the second-half.
Thailand will next take on host nation Singapore on Wednesday night at Sengkang Hockey Stadium.
