SIN V THA ( Bronze Medal ) 2016 Men Hockey World League Round 1 - Singapore (SIN)

Match Review SIN - THA 1-3
Report from Singapore Hockey Federation
Lions End HWL Round 1 on Disappointing Note
There was no glorious send-off for Mohd Sabri bin Yuhari who played his 67th and final game for Singapore in the Bronze Medal match against Thailand. The local boys caved under pressure as they lost 1-3 to Thailand at Sengkang Hockey Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The game got off to a fiery start with both Singapore and Thailand awarded a penalty corner each within the first minute of the match.
To the dismay of the crowd at Sengkang Hockey Stadium, both teams failed to convert their respective penalty corners as the score-line remained at 0-0.
A lapse in concentration by Tan Yi Ru in the 9th minute gave Thailand an opportunity to sneak in and take a snapshot at goal but the infallible A Suresh was at the right position to parry the effort away.
For the most part of the first half, Singapore were the more threatening side as they dominated possession and created numerous opportunities.
However, Thailand were able to grow into the game, gaining confidence as the game progressed.
A penalty corner at the 25th minute mark saw the Thais unleash a rocket shot that was destined for the top corner of the goal before it was intervened by Suresh with a spectacular one-handed save.
With three minutes left in the first half, Boon-Art Thanakrit lights up the match with a delicious low drive to give Thailand the lead.
Unfortunately for the Thais, their joy was short-lived as the host nation retaliated in spectacular fashion with Lee Kendy taking advantage of a gap in the middle of the D to smash home the equalizer.
Things took a serious turn for the worst for the local side after a key mistake by Jaspal Grewal directly gifted Thailand a second goal. Thammueangkhun Surasak was able to take advantage of the two-on-one situation to slide home Thailand’s second goal.
From then on, it was an uphill task for Singapore as the Thais defended with numbers and discipline.
Singapore’s fate was sealed five minutes before the final whistle, a spectacular solo run by Thammueangkhun Surasak on the counter led to Prompattanakun Pongsak scoring through a deflected shot.
