Match Review SRI - THA 5-0

Report from Singapore Hockey Federation

Famous Five for Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka swept aside Thailand with a convincing 5-0 triumph to claim a spot in the finals of the 2016 World Hockey League Round 1 at Sengkang Hockey Stadium on Saturday evening.

Sri Lanka were definitely the superior side from the start. With an attacking formation, the Sri Lankans pinned the Thais deep in their own half, sending in endless barrage of attacks.

Following waves after waves of Sri Lankan attacks, the Thai defence eventually crumbled in the 17th minute. Dissanayake Duminda made a brilliant run on the right before the cutting it back for Sudusingha Sandaruwan to score.

With an assured performance from goalkeeper Boonbut Wanchalem, Thais defended resiliently and pegged the Sri Lankans back, preventing the Sri Lankans from scoring on numerous occasions.

Thailand sought to surprise their opponents with quick counter-attacks but more often than not, the final pass was lacking. Sri Lanka were able to regain the possession the moment Thailand attempted to pass into the attacking half.

The Thais were dealt a severe blow right before half time. A defensive lapse from the Thai defence allowed Rathnayaka Anuradha to race ahead of the defenders to give Sri Lanka a vital cushion goal.

Although Thailand emerged from the break with crisp passing and a greater urgency in attack, the Sri Lankans often outplayed them with superior technical skills. Captain for the day Mahara Damith was stupendous as he was at the center of everything, pulling the strings, linking up plays for Sri Lanka.

Trailing by 2-0, the Thais gave their all in a bid to even the score up. Utairatanakit Palipat and Tammueangkhun Surasa were able to conjure up chances to pull a goal back before Thailand were blindsided by a Rathnayaka Anuradha sucker punch.

Rathnayaka was able to score after Sri Lanka launched a quick counter-attack, putting the result beyond a shadow of a doubt.

After a lengthy delay due to inclement weather, Sudusingha Sandaruwan and Fernando Abeetha added to Sri Lanka’s tally, ending the game 5-0 in favour of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka will now play against China in the finals, while Thailand will be playing the loser for the all important 3rd placing which is also the final berth for Hockey World League Round 2.
