Goals Galore as HK SAR edge Kazakhstan 4-3

It was a close battle between Hong Kong SAR and Kazakhstan, with the East Asian side winning by a difference of one point to take fifth place as in the Round 1 Men Hockey League on Saturday.

Kazakhstan started strong in the first five minutes of the match, creating chances for their team and mostly turning defence into offence.

It was right at the 5th minute mark that Kazakhstan was awarded with a penalty corner. Hong Kong SAR’s custodian, Michael Chung, did well to keep their rivals at bay, brilliantly saving the shot from the penalty corner that nearly led to Kazakhstan opening the scoring.

Determined to score, Hong Kong SAR won a penalty stroke five minutes after with Tsang Kin Kan calmly putting the ball into the back of the net. Merely seconds later, Kazakhstan immediately responded as Tazhenov Bakytbek surged into the D to level the scores at 1-1.

Hong Kong SAR nearly put themselves back into the lead with a few good chances from penalty corners from the 10th minute mark till the 15th minute mark during the match, but they were unable to convert these efforts into points.

Kazakhstan eventually broke the tie score to lead the game with a well worked team effort with Tazhenov Bakytbek passing to Almen Talant for the tap in, making it 1-2.

Three minutes later, Hong Kong SAR bounced back and equalised through Tse Man Chun’s powerful point into the back of the net, making it Hong Kong SAR 2-2 Kazakhstan.

Hong Kong SAR continued to confidently push forward to establish their lead in the game, and they got the upper hand at the 21st minute mark when Felix Iu flicked the ball into the net, converting a goal from a penalty corner.

Hong Kong SAR continued to toil hard in terms of offense and guarded closely whenever the Kazakhs would have a chance to score. This was demonstrated by Hong Kong SAR’s custodian, Michael Chung, when he leapt to the right to deflect the shot from a Kazakhstan penalty corner at the 29th minute mark in the match.

Kazakhstan continued to search for another equalizing goal while Hong Kong SAR hoped to add to their lead as they started the second half. Hong Kong had good possession of the ball and almost found the back of the net several times after the restart.

A half-hour pause at the 40th minute mark due to the risk of lightning allowed Kazakhstan to regroup and rethink tactically, allowing them to score in the 44th minute mark when they surged into the Hong Kong SAR’s  D to allow Tazhenov Bakytbek to level the game.

Hong Kong SAR would respond by building up their attacks in the Kazakh D but their opponent’s custodian Sarsenbaiuly Bakiytbek was able to thwart their efforts.

The deadlock was broken at the 51st minute mark as Felix Iu’s wheezing shot into the net from the field of play restored HK SAR’s lead.

Michael Chung continued to ensure that Hong Kong SAR would not concede again as he showcased his skills well, getting into a couple of fine dives to keep the ball out of his net throughout the second half.

Kazakhstan certainly did not back down and could have nearly scored their equalizer after ferociously attacking the Hong Kong SAR defense throughout the remaining of the second half.

Their best chance to equalise in this half was a shot that went wide from Almen Talant at the 58th minute of the match.

At the end, Hong Kong SAR prevailed 4-3 in an intense match where both sides displayed plenty of effort in defending and attacking. In particular, the Kazakhs did not give up after Hong Kong’s fourth goal, pushing themselves to take any chance to equalise or win until the final whistle was blown.
