Match Review CHN - BRU 11-0
Report from Singapore Hockey Federation
China celebrate Group A top spot with 11-0 win against Brunei
China fired a warning to Group B runners-up Singapore on Thursday night with a dominant performance against Brunei that would forewarn what the host nation can expect when they take on the East Asian giants in the semi-finals.
China just took six seconds to get on the scoresheet in this evening match against their opponents, after Wang Bowen blitzed the Brunei defence to score a field goal.
China ‘s first penalty corner of the game which was converted by Zhang Taozhu for their second goal of the game in the 4th minute, before compatriot Su Lixing made it 3-0 after picking up the ball from a long pass before shooting past Brunei custodian Mohammad Jamain.
Mohamad Jamain was also called into action several times in the first half, doing his best to keep out penalty corner conversions in the 15th and 20th minutes. Sadly, the Brunei No. 1 had to be stretchered off at the 26th minute mark after sustaining a concussion.
Brunei were rattled into action after the first goal, and tried to push deeper into the Chinese half. They almost found themselves on the scoresheet after a long pass from midfield to Hashim Muhamad in the 21st minute but the Brunei number 8 was not able to get himself in a good position to score.
What Brunei was not able to do at the other end, China could. The men in red added their fourth goal through Yu Xin in the 22nd minute after breaking for the counter, leaving Hashim Muhamad to watch from afar in vain.
Before long, China made it virtually impossible for Brunei to have any chance of a come back with two well taken goals in the 29th and 32nd minutes by Su Kaijun.
Substitute keeper Afif Rahim did his best to keep China’s attackers from scoring, but he could not prevent a powerful shot by E Wenhui from hitting the back of the net at the stroke of half-time.
China started off the second half the same way as they did in the first, with the hunger and desire to get a few more goals. Zhang Taozhu opened the scoring for China in this half with a fantastic belter into the back of the net after a superb penalty corner sweep.
Two more fields goals by Wang Xiaowei in the 42nd minute and Sun Kaijun in the 47th brought the score to 10-0 for China, before Meng Dijao capped off the win with a goal in the 50th minute.
Brunei were more cautious in going forward and preferred to soak up pressure before attempting counter-attacks into their opponent’s half.
Their best chance of the match came in the 58th minute when Afif Sofry was able to fire in a ball from wide right to Zainal Hazman, but the latter could not reach the ball in time to post it past China custodian Wang Hongyu.
China certainly did not ease the pressure despite being 11-0 up and continued to cut the Brunei defence to shreds, earning two penalty corner in the last five minutes of the game. However, they were unable to get past an inspired Afif Rahim.
At the end of the day, Brunei should be thankful to their two keepers who helped keep the scoreline as low as possible.
China was able to anticipate Brunei’s moves to win this game easily, and they will certainly look to maintain that standard in order to beat Singapore in the first semi-finals match on Saturday night.
