Thailand Bites Back After Slow First Half to Win 4-3 against Hong Kong

It was a close match between Thailand and Hong Kong SAR in Round 1 of the 2016 Men Hockey League, with Thailand winning 4-3.

At the very start of the first half, Hong Kong surged forward with good possession of the ball. However, as passes between players became more strained because of the attempts to intercept by Thailand, Hong Kong lost possession of the ball at the three minute mark.

Surasak Thammueangkhun managed to snatch the ball but was tackled by one of the Hong Kong players, which in turn gets them a penalty corner. This first penalty corner, however, does not convert into a score as Narit Rodkeaw narrowly misses the ball.

As the first half progressed, players from both teams started to get more aggressive and more guarded with the ball. At the 6th minute mark, Chan Ka Chun struggled to keep the ball within his reach as Yongyut Chatree challenged him at the corner of the D.

Though Chan Ka Chun lost the ball for the next minute or so, a brilliant interception made by him at the 8th minute mark enabled him to pass to Yu Chun Hin, who was then challenged by the captain of the Thailand team, Pongsak Prompattanakun.

Before there was a chance for the Thais to get ahold of the ball, Yu Chun Hin passed to Siu Chun Ming, who successfully hurled the ball into the net, giving Hong Kong its first score in the match.

Three minutes later, a penalty stroke was granted to Hong Kong and it was Tsang Kin Kan who scored the second point for Hong Kong.

At the 16th minute mark, Chan Ka Chun attempted to score another goal, but was denied by Thailand’s custodian, Phubate Limotai, who delivered a wonderful save by blocking the ball just inches before it could have gone into the net.

Thailand was awarded its first penalty corner at the 19th minute mark, with Surasak Thammueangkhun fiercely fighting his way through Hong Kong’s defence before finally being able to shoot the ball into the net and give Thailand its first score in the match.

By half-time, Thailand lagged behind Hong Kong by a point as most of their chances were thwarted by the good defence set up by Hong Kong.

Hong Kong continued to dominate in the second half and another point was added at the 39th minute mark as Hong Kong Captain Siu Chun Ming scooped up the ball with Felix Iu easily shooting the ball into the net.

Seeing that they were now two points behind, Thailand’s formation on the pitch started to shift and it was evident they decided to change tactics.

Instead of waiting for chances of interception, they went on the offensive and challenged the rivals as much as they could, cornering them when they had the opportunity to. This allowed Thammueangkhun Sarasak to pull back a point for Thailand in the 44th minute mark of the game.

Gabriel Tsoi from Hong Kong was unable to score in the 45th minute mark as he was hustled off the ball by the defense barricade set up by Thailand.

Thailand’s eighth penalty corner at the 49th minute mark showed Thanakrit Boon-Art delivering a high ball which successfully got past Hong Kong’s custodian and equalized the score for both teams.

The deal breaker came when Thanakrit Boon – Art delivered a field goal at the 51st minute mark, leaving Hong Kong a point behind.

Thailand was able to keep Hong Kong SAR at bay with excellent offence tactics, and they were also extra careful as well not to grant their opponents any chance to score with an improved defensive performance in the second half.
