KAZ V SRI ( Pool B ) 2016 Men Hockey World League Round 1 - Singapore (SIN)

Match Review KAZ - SRI 0-7
Report from Singapore Hockey Federation
Kazakhstan Dealt With A Heavy Blow with loss to Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka were able to down Kazakhstan 7-0 victory, as the South Asian team’s rock-solid defence played a huge role in the win against their equally hardworking opponents.
Three minutes into the match, Kazakhstan’s Almen Talant took possession of the ball and charged his way to the corner of the D, only to be challenged by Karunamunige Nalantha of the Sri Lankan team and eventually lost possession of the ball.
Sri Lanka was already pressing the Kazakhstan team by the fifth minute of the match, with a penalty corner that they almost converted into a score.
But it did not take long for Sri Lanka to do so, with Sudusingha Sandraruwan scoring the first point at the 7th minute mark with a field goal.
Though Kazakhstan felt the pressure from the other team, actions were not made to double their efforts in defence. This evidently diminished their chances to score in the game.
This came to their realisation when at the 17th and the 20th minute mark, Abeetha Fernando delivered two thunderbolts into the goalposts and had given Sri Lanka its second and third points.
Like a giant woken up from a deep slumber, Kazakhstan became more aggressive and there definitely was a change in their tactics. Both players and spectators saw that more efforts were made to strengthen their defence and that they were not prepared to back down without a fight.
Tazhenov Bakytbek attempted to bring the ball into the goalpost at the 26th minute mark but a brilliant save was made by Chandrasekara Thusith, the custodian for the Sri Lankan team.
By half time, Sri Lanka had acquired 3 goals, with Kazakhstan lagging behind, although the latter had started to put more pressure on the Sri Lankan team as well.
Sri Lanka wasted no time to increase the scoreline in the second half, and by the 37th minute mark, they had scored another point with the help of its captain, Mahara Damith.
Doranegala Ishanka, Lahiru Panthie and Sudusingha Sandaruwan helped in boosting Sri Lanka’s score from 3 points to 7 points, eight minutes from full time.
Though Kazakhstan had chances throughout the second half, it was only at the 69th minute mark that they finally had a chance of getting a point.
The first penalty corner for the Kazakhstan team was what they desperately needed in order to come out of the match with at least a point in their scoreboard.
However Sri Lanka’s custodian, Chandrasekara Thusith, ensured that his team would keep a clean sheet with a brilliant save just as the final whistle was blown.
Kazakhstan had toiled throughout the match and it was evident that they were determined to win, but unfortunately, the many chances they lost eventually allowed Sri Lanka to take home the victory.
