Brunei Hold Off Vietnam for First Win At HWL
The match between Vietnam and Brunei progressed back and forth with both teams creating a fair share of chances but Brunei just managed to edge out Vietnam by the slightest of margins to snatch a vital 3-1 victory at Sengkang Hockey Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
The first significant chance came in the 5th minute when a Brunei penalty corner resulted in a shot that was pushed onto crossbar by Vietnam custodian Luu Phan Lap Luong.
Yusup Mohammad Morshidi had a glorious chance to put Brunei ahead when he found himself alone in the box with only the keeper to beat but his skied his effort way above the goal.
Vietnam created a chance of their own in the 22nd minute as Huyn Dai Phuc reverse shot was just inches wide of the goal.
Hyun would rue missing the chance the very next minute as disaster struck for Vietnam. Yusup Mohamad Zulkarnaien fired Brunei ahead as he drilled a scorching grounder past Luu Phan Lap Luong.
Brunei would then ride on the momentum gained to score their next goal in the 28th minute. Momin Alisam emerged from a pack of players to deflect a penalty corner effort to double his side’s lead.
Seven minutes after the break, Nguyen Le Quang provided Vietnam with a lifeline after a brilliant run from Bui Duc Bao down the left wing culminated in a well placed cross that was tucked away by Nguyen Le Quang.
A couple of minutes later, Vietnam almost equalized via a penalty corner but Jamain Mohammad was alert enough to produce a fantastic save.
Brunei found themselves with a gilt edged chance to pull ahead in 57th minute minute but Yusup Mohammad Morshidi’s low drive was just wide of the goal.
Vietnam desperately searched for an equalizer but they failed to capitalize on any chances that came their way.
Brunei scored once more in the final minute to cap off an all-important first victory at the 2016 Men Hockey World League Round 1.
