Match Review SIN - KAZ 6-0

Report from Singapore Hockey Federation

Singapore slam six past Kazakhstan despite dismal showing

The Lions were able to edge out Kazakhstan by 6-0 in the Pool B Match of 2016 Men Hockey World League Round 1 held at Sengkang Hockey Stadium on Saturday evening.

While the scoreline may have been 6-0 in favour of Singapore it was hardly a reflection of reality as both teams were neck and neck with each other in the early period of the game.

Chances were aplenty in the first 20 minutes of the game but both sides failed to capitalize on these opportunities.

Singapore goalkeeper A Suresh was phenomenal throughout the first half, foiling Kazakhstan’s front man by pulling off several spectacular saves. In fact, Singapore would definitely have conceded a goal if not for his first half heroics.

Through a counter-attacking game plan, Kazakhstan threatened as early as the third minute and it took a remarkable double save from Suresh to keep the visitors at bay.

After a series of passes through a patient build-up approach, Singapore finally broke the deadlock through Alias Muhammad Ashraff in the 27th minute.

Three minutes later, an instinctive finish from Goh Kai Yang resulted in Singapore doubling their lead.

An amazing mazy run from Johari Ahmad Faris followed by an even better finish puts some daylight between Singapore and their opponents a minute before halftime.

After the break, Singapore skipper Enrico Marican was able to add two more goals and a thunderbolt from Yuhari Mohammed Sabri through a penalty corner made it a 6-0 win for the Lions.

Despite scoring the same amount of goals in the second half, it was a much better showing from the host nation as they were able to control the flow of the game; constantly putting pressure on Kazakhstan while limiting their chances.

Singapore head coach Solomon Casoojee was dissatisfied with his team’s performance as he felt that they failed to execute the game plan.

Coach Casoojee said: “ We played terribly, not that we are happy with the effort and intensity. The game plan which we have been working on the last six weeks that will take us through the tournament, I think only 5 out of the entire 70 minutes we played to that plan and we got results out of it.”
