Report from Singapore Hockey Federation

Seventh Heaven for Sri Lanka in HWL Opener

Sri Lanka kicked off Round 1 of the Hockey World League with a resounding 7-0 win over Myanmar in their Men's Group B match at Sengkang Hockey Stadium on Saturday.

Sri Lanka started the game strongly and was unfortunate not to have scored within the first 20 minutes. This was largely due to a combination of resolute defending and brave goalkeeping from the Myanmar team.

Myanmar custodian Myo Thu Aung repelled penalty corner efforts from Doranegala Ishanka and Mahara Damith as he kept Sri Lanka at bay in the first 20 minutes of the game.

In the 15th minute, Myanmar carved out a chance of their own as Naing Win almost got onto the end of Thet Htwe’s drive.

Despite Myanmar’s resilience, Nanayakkara Lakshan was able to break the deadlock for Sri Lanka with a field goal in the 23rd minute. Mahara Damith could have extended the lead shortly after the restart but his effort was cleared off the line by Thu Hein Aung.

Despite Mahara’s profligacy, the floodgates were open for Sri Lanka with Welagedara Asanka and Fernando Abeetha scoring in quick succession through deflections before half time.

The Sri Lankans came out firing on all cylinders after the break with Rathnayaka Anuradha providing an assist for Sudusingha Sandaruwan in the 43rd minute.

Shortly after, Dharmarathne Harindra was on point to extend Sri Lanka’s lead to 5-0 through a penalty corner.

Five minutes before the hour mark, Sudusingha Sandaruwan was able to double his tally with a scrappy effort before Fernando rounded off a superb team effort to score the final goal of the game a minute later.

In spite of the scoreline, Myanmar were resilient and never gave up even after conceding seven goals. The scoreline would have been much more lopsided had it not been for their spirited effort.
