Thailand Romp Past Brunei with Masterful Display

Thailand kickstarted round one of 2016 Men Hockey World League with a thumping 7-0 Group A victory over Brunei at Sengkang Hockey Stadium on Saturday morning.

Thailand’s offensive onslaught began early in the second minute with Suphawong Adisuan finding his way into the circle before smashing the ball into the back of the net.

Brunei was given the perfect opportunity to level things up right before halftime when they were rewarded with a penalty corner. However, Karim Andi skied his effort as the first half came to a close with Brunei trailing close behind.

As the second half began, the Thais wasted no time and doubled their lead within three minutes as Thammeuangkhun Surasak found his way near the goal and flicked the ball in.

Thailand continued their barrage of attacks with Thammeuangkhun Surasak sneaking his way in from the left and shoots but Brunei custodian Rahim Atif pulled off a fantastic save, hoping to keep the game alive for Brunei.

In spite of Rahim’s heroics, Thammeuangkhun Surasak once again found the back of the net as he made his way down the right flank before smashing the ball into the goal to make it 3-0 to Thailand in the 41st minute.

Thailand once again widened the gap between them and Brunei as Manopab Varunchit, in a flurry of passes and deflections, managed to hit ball straight up into the top right corner making in 4-0 for Thailand.

The Bruneians had no answer for Thailand’s offensive masterstroke and the Thai scored thrice more in the final 20 minutes to make it a 7-0 win.

Although Thailand accomplished a dominating win in their first game, Head Coach Kim Kyung Soon cautioned against any form of complacency: “Despite the good result, the team is filled with new and young players which may pose a problem for us in our next game against China."
