New Zealand reveal Women's Junior World Cup squad

May 29, 2013
Impressive group contains no less than eight senior Black Sticks stars

Junior Black Sticks Women’s head coach Chris Leslie has named a talented team of 18 players for the Junior World Cup in July.

The wider squad was narrowed down following the recent five-test series against the Korea Under-21s, which was used for selection purposes. The Junior Black Sticks won the series with two wins, two draws and one loss.

The Junior Black Sticks depart New Zealand on July 19th and play two warm-ups against USA and England ahead of the Women’s Junior World Cup which starts in Germany on July 27th.

Leslie said the series against Korea was perfectly placed on the calendar as a build-up to world hockey’s premier age group event.

“It was pleasing to win the series but more impressive was the quality of play we showed throughout. It was an incredibly difficult job for our selectors because all players put their hands up during the series,” he said.

“Against quality opposition like Korea it was a true test for our players and was a good measure of where we’re currently at.

“We just need to work on putting together consistent performances and if we can do that we will be very competitive at the Junior World Cup.”

The team of 18 features eight players who are currently in the Black Sticks squad (Jenny Storey, Brooke Neal, Rosie Keddell, Julia King, Cass Reid, Sian Fremaux, Olivia Merry and Michaela Curtis) as well as Georgia Barnett who is in the Development Squad.

Several of those players are set to travel to Rotterdam with the Black Sticks for the World League Semi-Final, a trip that Leslie sees as a brilliant tune-up before they travel to the Junior World Cup.

“We’re very blessed to have several Black Sticks squad members in our team and those who are playing at World League will gain some amazing experience.

“At the end of the day they will be playing against the world’s best teams and world’s best players at World League so that will make them better players for us at the Junior World Cup.”

The draw for the Women’s Junior World Cup has not yet been finalised but it is likely the Junior Black Sticks will be joined by Australia, India and Russia in pool play.

The Men’s Junior World Cup runs from December 6th-15th in India. The Junior Black Sticks Men’s squad of 30 players will compete for final team spots over the next few months.

You can help support the Junior Black Sticks Men and Women by purchasing a 2013/14 Black Sticks calendar for just $25. All profits go to help fund the players to get to the Junior World Cup.

In addition, the Hockey Foundation in association with Craigs Investment Partners and Hockey New Zealand are planning a Gala Dinner to raise funds for the junior campaigns. Click here to find out more
