Van Ass confirms Netherlands squad for Champions Trophy

November 18, 2011
De Nooijer, Taekema and Van der Horst gain selection

Netherlands head coach Paul van Ass has named the eighteen players that will compete in next month’s Owen G Glenn FIH Champions Trophy, which takes place in Auckland, New Zealand.

Many of the big names have been selected, including penalty corner specialist Taeke Taekema, star midfielder Robbert van der Horst and legendary attacker Teun de Nooijer, a man who has played an incredible 439 times for his country, netting 216 goals in the process. Van Ass has selected two players who did not represent The Netherlands at the EuroHockey Nations Championships in the summer, with Quirijn Caspers and Mink van der Weerden both being given an opportunity to make their mark against the world’s finest teams.

A number of well known players have not made the squad. Amsterdam H&BC’s Floris Evers is continuing his recovery from a hernia, while Robbert Kemperman, Sander Baart, Laurence Docherty, Sam van der Ven, Melchior Looijen, Floris van der Linden, Eby Kessing and Marcel Balkestein have all missed the cut but will remain part of the Netherlands Olympic training group.

New names in the selection compared with the European Championships last summer, his Kamponger Quirijn Caspers and Mink van der Weerden of Orange-Black.
