Netherlands and Argentina reach Rabo FIH Champions Trophy Final

The Netherlands have grabbed a 2-0 win over Korea in the final match of Pool C, a result which was initially thought to be good enough to put both teams through to the Gold medal match of the Rabo FIH Champions Trophy in Amstelveen. However, Argentina launched a appeal regarding their Pool C placement which proved to be successful, giving them a place in the Final ahead of Korea. For more details about the appeal, please click here.

The Netherlands made the perfect start to the match when Kim Lammers cracked a reverse stick shot into the goal after just 25 seconds of play to send the Dutch fans into raptures.

It proved to be something of a wake-up call for Korea, who set about the task of finding an immediate response. Although the Asians produced some excellent attacking hockey, they could not find a way past the excellent Floortje Engels in the Netherlands goal. When they eventually did beat the Dutch shot-stopper they were denied by the frame of the goal, with Cho Eun Ji’s effort crashing against the left post before bouncing away to safety.

Mi Hyun Park went close to scoring the leveller when her deflection appeared to be heading into the bottom right corner of the goal, but again Engels reacted well to kick the ball clear.

The Netherlands scored their second goal of the game in the 29th minute through Carlijn Welten, but she had Claire Verhage to thank for her strike. Verhage produced a wonderful bit of skill on the baseline to eliminate first her marker then the goalkeeper, allowing Welten to slap the ball into an unguarded net.

The second half started in lively fashion, but genuine chances were few and far between. As the match drew to a close, Korea did everything they could to retain possession and ensure that their Dutch opponents did not have the opportunity to score a third goal.
