More rest needed for injured Naomi
National team coach Max Caldas will be without brilliant attacker Naomi van As at the Rabo FIH Champions Trophy, which begins in Amstelveen (The Netherlands) this weekend. The 2009 joint winner of the FIH Player of the Year Award has been ruled out due to an injury to her ankle and shin. Merel de Blaey (Larensche MHC) has been named as her replacement.
"Naomi has a light injury to her ankle and shin due to excessive stress," said Dutch national team doctor Conny van Bentum. "It is not serious and we were hoping that with a week of relative rest she would have recovered sufficiently but that is unfortunately not the case. Naomi now has to rest completely for another week and we expect that she will be fully fit to start the preparation for the European Championship. The Champions Trophy comes a little too early for Naomi."
After the Rabo FIH Champions Trophy, a group of 5 players including van As will rejoin the team. From this group of 23 players, Caldas will select the team for the EuroHockey Nations Championships, which will be played from 20 to 28 August in Mönchengladbach, Germany. The Netherlands will be aiming to achieve qualification for the London 2012 Olympics at that particular event.
