Bronze Medal Match

Reigning Olympic champions Germany ended their tournament on a massive high by grinding out a 1-0 win against host nation Great Britain to secure the bronze medal at the Hero Hockey Champions Trophy 2016 in London.

Striker Marco Miltkau scored the only goal of the game, but it was goalkeeper Nico Jacobi who was the star performer, producing numerous saves to stop Great Britain making their mark on the scoreboard.

The game was fiercely contested, with both sides having far more chances than the score-line would suggest, although GB will rue their failure to register despite having 20 circle entries and 12 shots on target, six of which came in the first quarter.

The winning goal arrived in the third quarter, with 25-year-old striker Miltkau scoring his fourth goal of the tournament to seal the bronze medal and condemn the home favourites to a fourth place finish.

“We came here with a team that had never played together before, and came directly from the German league”, said Germany midfielder Tobias Hauke. “We started ok against India, have improved game by game and now at the end we have finished in third place. With a little bit more luck in the earlier games we could have been in the final, but it's fine this year to get the third place in a really important tournament like the Champions Trophy because we have an even more important event coming up with the Olympics.”

Great Britain’s Sam Ward said: “We did everything today but score, so we can hold our heads up high. Playing at home is a fantastic experience; to get the home support is incredible. People really want to cheer us on, and the sport is getting bigger, which is a big thing for us - growing the game and making sure that people want to take part.”
