A fourth quarter penalty corner from Ashley Jackson earned Great Britain a crucial point to keep alive their chances of reaching the competition final at the men’s Hero Hockey Champions Trophy 2016 in London. However, the 1-1 result has ended Germany’s interest in defending the title they won in Bhubaneswar, India in 2014.

Germany kept the home fans quiet for long periods and netted the opening goal a minute before half time thanks to a wonderfully  penalty corner routine, with Tobias Hauke on hand to force the ball home from close range following an initial save from GB shot-stopper George Pinner. Jackson levelled with 12 minutes remaining to maintain hopes of Champions Trophy glory on home soil.

To qualify for the final, Great Britain need Australia to beat India before securing victory against Belgium, who also remain in the hunt for a place in the gold medal match going into the Thursday's last day of pool matches.

“I think we’d love to be sitting here right now in Australia’s position, knowing that we’ve pretty much reached the final and we can be looking forward to that", said GB's George Pinner. "We are still in the running, and that is what we said at the beginning of the tournament. We want to be competing for that and hopefully by the time we come to play Belgium we know that we can still make the final.”

Great Britain’s David Condon, who made his 100th senior international appearance, said: “I think back to when I first started in my first Champions Trophy in Melbourne 2009 and then it took me three years to break back into the squad so its a good feeling to get to this point.”
