The Olympic women's hockey tournament had its first two upsets today as the U.S. topped defending World Champion Argentina in a hard-fought 1-0 victory. Australia followed suit with a 3-1 win over Germany. New Zealand stayed unbeaten thanks to a straight forward 4-1 win against South Africa. More

Despite falling 6-0 to Australia in his side’s opening tie of the men’s Olympic Games, South African sweeper Andrew Cronje is confident the tournament’s lowest ranked side can make a big impact in London. Great Britain and the Netherlands remained unbeaten in Pool A action after each survived close games. The Dutch topped Japan, 3-2, while Great Britain had to dig deep in a 5-3 win against Korea. Belgium, the Cinderella of the competition, held China to a goalless draw, moving the China into third place in the standings. More

The Spanish hockey Federation website today announced that Spanish captain Santiago Freixa is out of the Olympic tournament after suffering a broken arm in today’s game against Pakistan. Freixa will be replaced by defenseman Andres Mir, who was named as one of two alternates for the Spanish national team in London. x 14 More

Natascha Keller made history today when she was named Germany’s flag bearer for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Keller is the first-ever hockey player to be given the honor for Germany. The 35 year-old was on the German team that won the Olympic gold medal in 2004 and has played in more than 400 international games. x 36 More
