China nailed India in the men’s hockey event of the Asian Games in Doha, Qatar. In Tuesday’s action at the most important Asian sporting event, the Chinese team defeated its rival 3-2. Korea had some starting problems against Bangladesh, but finally blew the opponent off the pitch (9-1) his first match here in Doha, Qatar. The Asian Games is the first qualifying event for the 2008 Beijing Olympics as minimum two Olympic berths are at stake in both the men’s and women’s tournament.
After the surprising draw of Pakistan against Malaysia on Monday (1-1), the second day of the men’s competition at the Asian Games was also one with a surprising factor. China upset India by starting off the match with an aggressive playing style and scored two goals in the first 20 minutes of the match. Liang Hu opened the score, while his teammate Xiantang Lui put the 2-0 on the scoreboard. At the end of the first half, India came closer by a goal of Rajpal Singh.
In the second half, India had many chances but was not able to score. When Chinese Ji Song scored the 3-1 it looked that the match was over. India came back immediately and scored the 3-2 by a penalty corner of Shivendra Singh. India had several chances during the last ten minutes of the match, but it was China that took the victory.
In the other men’s match scheduled on Tuesday it was not all that easy for Korea, the real favorite to win the Asian Games, in the first half of its match against Bangladesh. After Jong Hyun Jang opened the score for Korea, Bangladesh equaled the match thanks to a goal of captain Musa Mia.
BDO World Cup semifinalist Korea took back the lead just before halftime and finally scored seven more goals in the second half and clinched the match 9-1. Jong Hyun Jang helped his team a lot by scored seven goals.
In women’s Asian Games action, Korea and Japan remain the co-leaders with seven points having played three matches. Korea defeated Hong Kong 15-0, while Japan nailed Korea 12-0. China, the team that only played two matches so far, is the only team that didn’t drop a point after its 3-1 win over India and is ranked third with six points.
Action at the Asian Games will continue on Wednesday with two men’s and three women’s matches scheduled.
