The BDO World Cup, Men will reach a record number of viewers, in a record number of countries, via a record number of broadcasters.
Live and delayed as-live broadcasts of the World Cup now reach over 140 countries in all five continents, without counting worldwide news services and globally distributed feature programmes such as Transworld Sport. The previous Men's World Cup, held in 2002 in Kuala Lumpur reached 96 countries.
Els van Breda Vriesman, International Hockey Federation (FIH) President, commented, 'Since taking our TV distribution in-house in 2005 we have worked very hard to increase the number of long-term relationships with key broadcasters, in both strong and development territories for hockey. This is a major factor in hockey's growing global development among sports fans and also its commercial appeal to sponsors and advertisers.'
Since FIH took its TV rights in-house in 2005, it has multiplied its number of long term TV deals with both terrestrial and cable and satellite broadcasters as follows, to guarantee global TV coverage from all its televised major events:
FIH Broadcast Partners
Eurosport - Pan Europe
NOS - Netherlands
Teledeporte - Spain
Ten Sports - Asia subcontinent and Middle East
PTV - Pakistan
Astro Supersport - Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand
CCTV5 – China
Starhub Supersports - Singapore
Fox Sports - Australia
Sky Sports - New Zealand
Mnet Supersport - Pan-Africa
ESPN Sur - Pan-South America
Transworld Sport - Worldwide
In addition there have been several of ad-hoc deals in countries participating in major FIH events on a less frequent basis, such as with cable and satellite channel Poverkhnost in Ukraine for this year's Samsung World Cup Qualifier. FIH also distributes its television magazine 'WorldHockey Monthly' to over 100 countries.
