International Hockey Federation (FIH) coach Niall Sturrock is conducting a weeklong beginners' coaching course in South East African country of Malawi. Speaking after opening the course in the city of Blantyre on Saturday, Sturrock urged the 60 participants to take the training seriously for them to impart correct hockey basic knowledge to youngsters in schools.
The coach from Scotland, secretary of the FIH Development and Coaches Committee, also urged Hockey Association of Malawi (HAM) to speed up its plans to construct a state-of-the-art astro-turf stadium.
"Most countries are playing hockey on astro-turf and HAM also need such type of facility here," Sturrock said. "I would also like to encourage the association to participate in more international matches and events to give the players exposure. Without exposure it is difficult for the sport to improve."
HAM President Tochi Gill said he was hopeful Sturruck's visit would go along way in upgrading the hockey standards in Malawi.
