Scottish Hockey today announced the senior women’s squad who will be seeking glory at the Rabo European Indoor Nations Championship in the Netherlands later this month.
Coach Gordon Shepherd has placed his faith in the squad who took gold at the CS Indoor Tournament in Birmingham at the weekend, with experienced international Tracey Menzies taking over the second keeper’s slot from youngster Claire Ritchie.
Shepherd was delighted with his team’s performance in Birmingham at the weekend and has high hopes for their European campaign.
'The weekend was very successful, not only the fact that we won the tournament but also because it gave us the opportunity to try so many things,' he said.
“I’m really happy with the progress I have seen so far from the squad but I know that the Europeans are going to be extremely tough. We are aiming for a top six finish in Eindhoven which is achievable, but it won’t be easy.'
The squad features seven of the players who secured promotion to the top division in 2004 when they finished second in the trophy competition recording wins over Portugal, Poland, Switzerland and Slovakia.
The line up also includes a double Olympian from the outdoor game in Pauline Stott.
Stott hung up her international colours after the Olympic Games in Sydney where she was the first Scottish captain of a GB team but was persuaded out of retirement by coach Shepherd.
Scotland needs to secure a top six finish to ensure automatic qualification for the Indoor World Cup in Austria in 2007.
The Scots are drawn in Pool A in Eindhoven with European Champions Germany, France (who finished just out of the medals in 2004) and Austria.
Scotland earned promotion to the top division in 2004 when they finished second in the trophy competition recording wins over Portugal, Poland, Switzerland and Slovakia.
Scotland play their first match against Germany on Friday, 20 January, at 11:45.
