Here is our daily 'pitch side ponderings' with USA's Emily Wold, after the USA defeated Spain 3-1 in the opening pool B match against Spain in the Champions Challenge 1.

That was a great start to the tournament. How did you feel it went out there today?

"It went really well. It is always good to get a tournament off to a winning start. This is a great tournament to have before the World Cup, we will play some teams that we haven't played much before which gives us a good challenge. And teams like South Africa and Belgium we will meet in the World Cup so it is good to see where we are against them right now."

You have taken a sabbatical from your studies (in media and communications), has that made a big difference to your life right now?

"Yes, I stopped my studies in December and I will not be going back to college until September. It has meant that I can really focus on hockey; when I was studying as well I had to focus on both my studies and my hockey. It is a full-time job for me now. One of the best things is that I get to spend so much more time with my teammates, that has made me feel a much more integral part of the team."

Are you getting excited about the prospect of playing in the World Cup?

"Oh yes, the World Cup is such an incredible, hyped up tournament. Its going to be great, particularly as the guys are all playing there too. Hockey in Holland is just so amazing, so yes, I am really hoping to make the team and be there. We will be spending the next few weeks training, practising - nothing too intensive because we want to go to the tournament fresh."
