7th -8th place playoff
Ireland – France 6-4 (half-time: 0-3)
Ireland produced an incredible second half comeback to recover from a 4-0 deficit to beat France 6-4 in one of the most exciting ties of the tournament, claiming seventh place into the bargain. The French dominated the first half with Martin Genestet netting early on before a rain delay saw the sides take shelter for five minutes. Guillaume Deront and a Lucas Sevestre penalty corner extended the margin before Simon Martin-Brisac made it 4-0 in the 37th minute.
France were flying at this stage but were stung by a volley of penalty corners from an Irish side who showed immense pride to fight back. Conor Harte and Timmy Cockram set them on their way before Chris Cargo finished off Peter Caruth’s excellent run, capping a run of three goals in five minutes.
Shane O’Donoghue roofed a drag-flick to equalise in the 56th minute and Conor Harte and Caruth closed out the win in a mad-cap closing few minutes in which two French players were sin-binned while their goalkeeper was also replaced. Kicking back Francois Scheefer made one brilliant save with his feet before the close but they could not force a result as Ireland claimed seventh, their pre-tournament ranking, with France doing likewise in eighth.
