Hockey Queensland has issued a rallying call appealing for the Hockey community to stand together and assist struggling Bundaberg Hockey Association after the recent devastating floods.
Hockey Queensland has set up a Flood Relief Fund as an offer of support to Bundaberg Hockey after their Clubhouse, Hockey Centre and fields were destroyed by the Australia Day floods.
Hockey Queensland will facilitate fundraising activities at hockey events throughout the year to raise money for the cause, including the upcoming Under 21 Men’s Australian Championships on April 2-13 in Brisbane. Brisbane Women’s Hockey Association was the first Association to respond to the call, pledging $5,000 to show its support.
The Bundaberg Hockey Flood Relief Fund will be a way to show Bundaberg that the Hockey community is behind them, and is there to help get them back on their feet, as reiterated in a statement by Hockey Queensland CEO, Kim Guerin.
“The Queensland Hockey Community has been substantially affected by several natural disasters over the last few years; however this devastating event in Bundaberg has shaken the Hockey Community to its core. We need to put our hand up and do something to help this Association,” she said
Hockey Australia Chief Executive, Mark Anderson also offered his support of the initiative saying, “The Australian hockey community is shocked by the destruction that has befallen Bundaberg, and we are only too happy to support the Flood Relief Fund. Hockey Australia have a Board Meeting next week where we will be discussing a range of ways we may be able to assist Bundaberg to get the facility, competition and hockey community back up and operating.”
Hockey Queensland will work with various Member Associations, State Associations and Hockey Australia to raise money throughout the year.
