The South African Hockey Association (SAHA) have appointed the management team that will be in charge of the South Africa men’s national team for the upcoming World League round 2 event that takes place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from February 27 to March 5.
The appointments are for the World League event only, as SAHA will be following a full recruitment process thereafter.
The South African men’s team head coach for the London 2012 Olympic Games, Gregg Clark, is currently coaching in the Hockey India League.
Former South Africa midfielder Charlie Pereira has been named head coach for Rio.
Pereira, the current KZN Inland head coach, will have two trainers in his management team. They are provincial coaches Pierre le Roux (Western Province) and Craig Fulton (Northern Blues).
The physical conditioning coach will be Rob van Ginkel of Southern Gauteng, while Mo Malebye of Southern Gauteng will be the video analyst.
SA Hockey Association CEO Marissa Langeni said that these appointments were made from the current senior provincial coaches and each brings to the party a set of skills that the national hockey authority believes will enhance the overall delivery of the team to the World League event.
“Charlie Pereira has strong leadership skills, is a strategist by nature and has a notable ability to influence team dynamics and performance, while in trainers Pierre le Roux and Craig Fulton we have a solid base of technical and tactical knowledge,” said Langeni.
A big squad of players are currently attending the national training camp at Hartleyvale Stadium in Cape Town, which started Monday and ends over the weekend.
Bartel Berkhout of Holland is leading the camp alongside Pereira.
