Main Objectives
- Develop and implement a world-class coaching and performance structure for USA Field Hockey
- Lead the USA Men’s and Women’s National Teams to international success
- Lead the Domestic High Performance Program
Principal Activities
Strategic Management
- Contribute to the development of coaching and performance within the Strategic and Business Plan to 2020
- Manage and monitor the implementation of all elements involving coach education and player development, to include the provision of an integrated support service.
- Foster a field hockey environment in the USA that best prepares athletes and coaches to play or coach at the highest level
Performance Management
- Coaching Education and Certification
- Develop, maintain, and implement a World Class Certification program for all levels of coaches
- Create specific programs to facilitate the growth of coaching expertise for coaches at each of the following levels: High Performance, NCAA, High School, club, youth
- Develop online and mobile resources to enhance the knowledge and expertise of all coaches
- Integrate coach education alongside the officiating education program.
Athlete Pathway
- Develop and implement the Athlete Pathway for USA Field Hockey
- Put in place the structures that identify and develop talent through a logical pathway recognizing the unique structure of the sport in the USA.
- Champion the Athlete Pathway and work with all stakeholders to ensure its success
Olympic Development (Futures) Program
- Develop, manage, and lead the content delivery of the Olympic Development Program
- Assist the Regions to develop their Regional Program and ensure the delivery of a nationally coordinated and consistent approach to the program.
- Work with the Futures Manager to regularly evaluate and update the program
- Manage the implementation of recommendations from reviews
High Performance
- Develop and direct the talent identification and selection process for all National teams
- Develop in conjunction with the National Team coaches, the annual performance plans for the National programs
- Develop, deliver and monitor the Support Services Plan for the High Performance Program that delivers an effective integrated sports medicine and sports sciences program.
Junior High Performance Program
- Develop and direct the Junior High Performance program
- Develop and direct junior representative teams for men and women (U17, U19, U21).
- Oversee all Junior National Teams in conjunction with the Women’s and Men’s National Team Coaches.
Regional High Performance Program
- Develop and direct the Regional High Performance programs in conjunction with the National Team and Regional High Performance Coaches in preparation for the national championships.
Planning and Financial Management
- Develop, manage and monitor the Coaching Annual Plan and related budgets in conjunction with the WNT and MNT Senior coaches.
- Assist with the preparation of funding applications and proposals that relate to the Coaching Program
Key Performance Indicators
- Achieving agreed upon performance markers with the Executive Director and USOC for the Jr and Sr National Teams (WNT & MNT) performance at Olympic Games, World Cup, Champions Trophy, World League, Pan Am Games, Pan Am Cup tournaments in conjunction with the WNT and MNT Senior coaches.
- Quality of coaching improvement as noted in annual market research of key stakeholder groups

- Women’s and Men’s National Team Head Coaches and Assistant Coaches
- National Team Managers, Medical Staff, USOC performance directors
Monitoring and Reporting
- Monitor and report on the Coaching Program
- Manage the implementation of recommendations from reviews
- Report as required to the Executive Director
Key Relationships
- Executive Director, National Coaches, Support Services, Managing Director of Olympic & Athlete Development, Selectors, Regional Directors, National Umpire Director, Youth Development Manager, NCAA, NFHS, USOC.
Personal Qualities
Experience
- At least ten years experience in coaching elite level field hockey
- Highly desirable to have experience and knowledge of the critical success factors for world-class high performance hockey programs
- Highly desirable to be well connected internationally with world-class hockey
- Experience in planning and managing coaching programs, and related budgets
- Evidence of successfully and positively working with professional staff, diverse stakeholders, and volunteers
Knowledge
- An Internationally recognized high level coaching qualification
- Preferably, educational qualifications that demonstrate a senior management capability
- A thorough knowledge of best practice high performance concepts and their application
- An understanding of sports science, nutrition, and sport medicine requirements for hockey
- An understanding of the wider social and political context in which hockey operates
- An awareness of the place of hockey in the United States of America
