Delhi Waveriders launched their Hero Hockey India League campaign in superb style by recording a comfortable and fully deserved 2-1 victory over Jaypee Punjab Warriors at the Major Dhyan Chand National stadium on Monday.

Germany’s Oskar Deecke (FG, 14min) and Gurwinder Singh Chandi (FG, 22m) were on target for the home team, while Spaniard Roger Padros (FG, 42m) scored the consolation goal for the visitors, who were kept in the game thanks to a string of stunning saves from goalkeeper Jaap Stockmann.  The Dutchman’s superb performance was enough to win him the Man of the Match award.

“The first game is always crucial for the teams’ morale and we executed our roles well, emerging victorious”, said Delhi Waveriders captain Sardar Singh in the post-match press conference. “Having played together for a short time we are really satisfied with our performance.”

Ahead of the match, a laser show marked the start of the inaugural Hockey India League, lighting up the Delhi sky and greatly impressing the fans in the stands and those watching on television. The opening ceremony also featured high quality performances from figure skating duo Alifya and Yuri as well as a string of dare-devil stunts.
