Veteran hockey coach Leelananda Ittapana passed away at the age of 51 after suffering from dengue.
Leelananda devoted most of his time, coaching at all age group levels at Ananda College, Wesley College and a few other schools, clubs, Merchantile Hockey Association and national teams.
He was a talented player and represented Ceylon Cold Stores (CCS) and John Keells Group in all tournaments conducted by the Merchantile Hockey Association. His outstanding performances enabled him to be selected to represent Merchantile Hockey Association in both the junior and senior teams at the National Hockey Championships of Sri Lanka from 1980 to 1982.
He was the junior coach for Merchantile Hockey Association in 1996, 1997 and 2000 and also the the manager in 2010. He was a senior coach from 1998 to date and selector from 1995 to date.
He was the coach of the National team and has been on several tours with the team. The Federation of International Hockey had recognized his talent as a coach and selected him many times to follow coaching and training programs abroad.
He had qualified to train coaches and is regarded as the most qualified coach in Sri Lanka
