England goalkeeper Simon Mason has informed head coach Jason Lee that he has retired after 12 years and almost 200 international matches.

In an impressive career, Mason won 120 England caps and 74 Great Birtain caps and, at the age of 31, has decided to concentrate on his business interests.

“Simon, apart from his imposing 6’5” frame between the posts, has been a giant in many ambassadorial roles within sport in general,” manager David Whittle said.

“He participated in the last 3 Olympic Games, 2 Commonwealth Games, 3 World Cups and 3 European Cups giving him vast experience which I sure will continue in the game in some capacity in the future.

“We need people of his calibre with such an articulate ability to take hockey forward into a new era.  I would like to think that, whilst we have lost a world class player, we have gained a hard working, diligent, forward thinking ally off the pitch.”
