Kookaburras 2012 London Olympic Games goalkeeper has retired from international hockey.
Off the back of bronze medal success in London and a gold medal winning performance at the 2012 Australian Hockey League, Burgers has decided to end his international hockey career for Australia.
Burgers represented the Kookaburras on 94 occasions, including six major events where he medalled.
Burgers won three consecutive Champions Trophy gold medals between 2008-10, a Commonwealth Games and World Cup gold medal in 2010, and claimed a bronze medal in the recent 2012 London Olympic Games.
“Making the 2012 London Olympic team and winning a World Cup gold medal are the two greatest achievements of my career” said Burgers.
To add to his major international success, Burgers was a member of the 2010 & 2012 Queensland Blades team which won gold in the Australian Hockey League.
“I had the privilege to play under an array of quality coaches in Australia and the talent pool of coaches in Australia is why we’re always so competitive on the world stage” said Burgers.
“With their guidance and support, I became a better player and most importantly, a better person” said Burgers.
Burgers is undecided whether to continue his Australian Hockey League career and is looking into the fantastic playing opportunities arising in India.
Burgers credits a great deal of success to his wife Kylie, explaining that “without Kylie, I would never have made it as far as I did”.
Hockey Australia would like congratulate Nathan on a wonderful sporting career and wish him and his family the best in the next chapter of their lives.
