Germany defender Jan-Marco Montag has announced that he is retiring from international hockey. The 29 year old represented his country 221 times, helping them claim both the 2006 FIH World Cup in Mönchengladbach and the Gold medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
In a career that lasted nearly a decade, “Jambo” scored over 50 goals for his country. As well as the glorious successes at the 2006 World Cup and 2008 Olympic Games, Montag was also a central figure in the Germany team that won Gold at the 2011 EuroHockey Nations Championships. He also has a Gold Medal from the 2007 Champions Trophy in Kuala Lumpur.
Earlier this year, Montag suffered the heartache of being overlooked for the Germany squad that won the Gold medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games, but it was a rare negative in an exceptional international playing career.
Montag will now focus his energies on captaining Euro Hockey League competitors Rot-Weiss Köln as well the tricky task of managing his career whilst also working on a degree in Business Administration.
